Patriots & Parasites: South Africa and the Struggle to Evade History by Dene Smuts

Patriots & Parasites: South Africa and the Struggle to Evade History by Dene Smuts is a compelling and thought-provoking political memoir that provides an insider’s perspective on South Africa’s turbulent political history, its transition from apartheid to democracy, and the challenges facing the country in the post-apartheid era.

Drawing on her extensive experience as a journalist, politician and opposition Member of Parliament, Dene Smuts offers a detailed examination of the political events, personalities and decisions that shaped modern South Africa. Patriots & Parasites combines personal recollections with political analysis, providing valuable insights into the country’s journey towards constitutional democracy.

Smuts served in Parliament for 25 years, witnessing some of the most significant developments in South African history. Her political career spanned the final years of apartheid, the negotiations that brought about democratic government, the historic elections of 1994, and the subsequent administrations of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma.

Throughout Patriots & Parasites, Smuts examines the development of South Africa’s Constitution, the establishment of the Bill of Rights, and the important role played by Parliament and the judiciary in protecting democratic freedoms. She reflects on the achievements of the country’s democratic transition while questioning the political decisions and leadership failures that threatened its constitutional foundations.

Patriots & Parasites also explores the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the continuing effects of apartheid, racial divisions, political accountability, corruption, press freedom and the difficulties of achieving meaningful reconciliation in a deeply divided society.
