Penny Wheep by Hugh M’Diarmid is one of the landmark works of the Scottish Literary Renaissance and an increasingly scarce title in first edition. Published in Edinburgh and London by William Blackwood & Sons in 1926, this collection followed M’Diarmid’s earlier Sangschaw and helped establish him as the foremost modern poet writing in Scots.
Penny Wheep appears to be the 1926 first edition and retains the scarce original dust jacket, an important feature seldom found with surviving copies. The jacket remains complete with only minor edge wear and light water marking to the spine. Beneath the jacket, the book is bound in attractive blue cloth with the distinctive marbled lettering to the spine still sharp and bright.
An ideal copy of Penny Wheep for collectors of Scottish literature, modernist poetry, or first editions, this example offers strong shelf appeal and would also suit the overseas market, where copies in original jacket are difficult to source. Midlands Books ships worldwide, making this a particularly appealing purchase for collectors outside South Africa.
Condition – Near Fine in a Very Good original dust jacket
Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light water marking to the spine. Blue cloth boards are in near fine condition with bright dark blue lettering to the spine. Internally, both endpapers are discolored where the dust jacket flaps do not reach. Minor foxing is present to some pages and to the text block edges. Overall a very attractive and well-preserved copy for a 1926 first edition.
