Written as an accessible historical narrative, the book traces Piet Retief’s life from his earlier years in the Cape through his activities in the Albany district and the Winterberg region, his involvement with Andries Stockenström, and his eventual participation in the Great Trek. Later chapters follow his role as a Voortrekker leader, his period as governor, the movement into Natal and his fateful dealings with the Zulu king Dingane.
The contents include chapters titled Bolandse Dae, Werksaamhede in Albanie, Onder die Winterberge, Retief en Stockenström, Trek, Goewerneur, Natal, Retief en Dingaan, Afskeid and Kwa Matiwane.
Maria Hugo was a South African historian and educator. Her Piet Retief was written as a historical biography intended to introduce younger readers to the Great Trek and its personalities.
