This monumental volume was created as a lavish tribute to the pontificate of Pope Pius XI (Achille Ratti), documenting the architectural, urban and ecclesiastical projects undertaken during his leadership of the Catholic Church from 1922 to 1939. Produced as a luxurious folio with a richly bound hardcover, gold‑edged pages and the papal coat of arms impressed on the cover, this book stands as both a visual and documentary celebration of one of the most ambitious eras of Vatican building and restoration.
In Pio XI – Monumenti ed Opere – Omaggio di Ammirazione e di Devozione, Monsignor Guido Anichini provides descriptive text to accompany an extensive array of illustrations, photographs and color plates by Arturo Faccioli that capture noteworthy works completed or initiated under Pius XI’s direction. The volume highlights major constructions such as the Palazzo del Governatorato, the Collegio Etiopico, the railway station adjacent to Vatican City, the entrances to the Vatican Museums and Pinacoteca, and various ecclesiastical palaces and institutions in Rome and beyond. Its detail offers a unique window into the architectural and artistic strategies that shaped the Vatican’s physical presence in the early twentieth century.
