Published in 1961, Ports of South Africa: Harbour Reference Book is an uncommon and highly detailed maritime reference work covering the harbours and shipping operations of South Africa during the early Republic period. Produced for shipping companies, harbour officials and import-export businesses, this 176-page hardcover provides a fascinating snapshot of South African port infrastructure and maritime administration in the early 1960s.
Ports of South Africa is divided into four major sections: Port Operations, Import and Export information, Tariff of Dues and Charges, and Harbour Regulations. Included are four large fold-out port diagrams and plans, together with harbour maps, aerial photographs, technical information and operational data for South African ports. It would make an excellent addition to any Africana, maritime, transport, shipping or industrial history collection.
Particularly attractive is Ports of South Africa’s period presentation binding issued “With the Compliments of Transocean Liners Cape Town (Pty.) Ltd.”, giving the volume additional appeal as a piece of South African shipping ephemera.
Condition – Very Good
Red hardcover boards remain sound with light handling and minor marks. Small ownership inscription and gift inscription to front free endpaper. Internally clean and well preserved with light foxing to the preliminaries. All four fold-out port diagrams are present and in very good condition.
