Profile of the Deltics by J. S. Whiteley and G. W. Morrison was published in 1980 by the Oxford Publishing Co. of Headington, Oxford, as part of the OPC Profile Series, and printed by Blackwell’s in the City of Oxford. In their acknowledgement the authors describe it as their second Deltic album.
The book is a large-format photographic album of the English Electric Deltics, from the eye-catching light blue prototype on trial runs in 1959 to the twenty-two production locomotives that worked the accelerated InterCity services on the East Coast main line from 1961. Black-and-white photographs with detailed captions follow the Deltics at speed, on shed and at stations such as Kings Cross and Doncaster, through to the twilight of their careers as the HSTs took over.
The Deltics were among the most powerful and best-loved diesel locomotives ever to run in Britain, and their withdrawal in the early 1980s drew huge crowds of enthusiasts. Profile of the Deltics records them in their final years of front-line service.
It will appeal to Deltic and Class 55 enthusiasts, followers of British Rail diesel traction, East Coast main line modellers, and collectors of the OPC Profile Series.
