Originally published in 1871, this book is a personal and historical account by Rev. Henry Hare Dugmore, an 1820 British Settler and Methodist missionary in South Africa. Based on a lecture given during the 1870 Settlers’ Jubilee, it recounts early settler life in the Albany region and includes reflections on the 1835 Frontier War.
Dugmore’s narrative offers unique insight into settler hardships, interactions with indigenous peoples, and the missionary experience in the Eastern Cape. The book has been reprinted several times, including notable editions in 1958 and a limited facsimile edition in 1990.
A valuable resource for anyone interested in South African colonial history and the legacy of the 1820 Settlers.
