Republic of South Africa – 20 Cents – First Decimal Series (KM#61)

The Republic of South Africa 20 Cents coin from the first decimal series was introduced following the country’s transition to a decimal currency system in 1961, when the Rand replaced the old pound, shilling, and pence system. This change coincided with the establishment of the Republic of South Africa after the country left the Commonwealth and became a republic.

The obverse of the coin features the South African coat of arms used during the republican era prior to the 2000 redesign. The arms show a shield supported by a springbok and a gemsbok, topped by a lion holding four bound rods symbolising unity and authority. Above the design appears the country’s name in both official languages of the time, “SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA”, reflecting the bilingual heritage of Afrikaans and English.

The reverse displays the denomination “20c” prominently at the centre with the year of issue below. The simple yet functional design reflects the modern style adopted for South Africa’s new decimal coinage. These coins were widely circulated and became a common feature of everyday commerce during the early decades of the Rand currency system.

Coins from the first decimal series represent an important transitional period in South African monetary history, marking the shift from the colonial-era pound system to the modern Rand-based currency. Today they remain popular among collectors of South African numismatics.
