Ron Ranson’s Painting School: Oils by Trevor Chamberlain is an attractive and highly practical guide to the art of oil painting, written by respected British painter and teacher Trevor Chamberlain. Published by Anaya Publishers in 1993 as part of the popular Ron Ranson’s Painting School series, this first edition provides an accessible yet substantial introduction to developing confidence and skill with oil paints.
Chamberlain approaches oil painting from the perspective of an experienced working artist, combining technical instruction with an emphasis on observation, atmosphere, colour and confident brushwork. Ron Ranson’s Painting School: Oils explores essential materials and equipment before progressing through important principles including tonal values, composition, colour, skies, water, trees, landscapes, buildings, street scenes, interiors, shadows, figures and animals. More than 120 examples of Chamberlain’s artwork in colour help demonstrate how these principles translate into finished paintings.
Particularly appealing are Chamberlain’s expressive landscapes, marine subjects and architectural scenes, making Ron Ranson’s Painting School: Oils an excellent reference for painters interested in capturing light and atmosphere without becoming overly constrained by detail. The clear instructional approach makes the book suitable for developing artists, while Chamberlain’s accomplished paintings provide plenty of inspiration for more experienced painters and collectors of traditional British art books.
Now over thirty years old, this 1993 first edition is also an appealing addition to a collection of vintage art instruction books, particularly alongside other titles from the Ron Ranson’s Painting School series.
