Samaritan of South African Rugby by Pat Tebbutt

Samaritan of South African Rugby: History of the Chris Burger / Petro Jackson Players Fund (1980–2010) by Pat Tebbutt is a moving and historically important account of one of South Africa’s most respected rugby charities and support organisations. Published in 2010 by SUN PReSS, this hardcover edition chronicles the first thirty years of the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players Fund, an institution created to support rugby players who suffered catastrophic spinal injuries while playing the game.

Samaritan explores the origins of the Fund following the tragic injuries sustained by Chris Burger and Petro Jackson, and documents how the organisation grew into a vital support structure within South African rugby. Through detailed historical narrative, personal stories, archival photographs, and reflections from rugby personalities and administrators, Pat Tebbutt presents a compelling story of resilience, compassion, and community spirit.

This work is more than a rugby history title; it is an important social and humanitarian record connected to South African sport. Samaritan highlights the Fund’s efforts in rehabilitation, awareness campaigns, player support, and injury prevention, while also offering insight into the broader development of rugby culture in South Africa during a transformative period in the country’s history.

An excellent addition for collectors of Springbok rugby literature, South African sports history, rugby memorabilia, and Africana non-fiction. Samaritan will appeal strongly to rugby enthusiasts, historians, collectors of South African sporting books, and supporters of the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players Fund.
