Sappi Tree Spotting – Highveld And The Drakensberg

Sappi Tree Spotting – Highveld and the Drakensberg by Val Thomas and Ina Grant, illustrated by Joan van Gogh, is a richly illustrated and accessible tree guide first published in 1998. This softcover title is part of the acclaimed Sappi Tree Spotting series and focuses on trees and shrubs found in the Highveld, the Drakensberg, and the Eastern Cape mountains. Designed for both beginner and experienced nature enthusiasts, the book uses an ecozone approach to group trees according to the habitats in which they occur—such as rocky ridges, riversides, and grasslands—making identification intuitive and location-based.

The guide is filled with full-colour illustrations and photographs that clearly depict key features of each species, including shape, bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, and typical growing environments. Regional distribution maps are included to help users locate trees in national parks, hiking trails, and nature reserves. The writing style is friendly and non-technical, with a clear identification system and practical notes on seasonal changes, ecological importance, traditional uses, and tips for successful tree spotting.

Covering over 120 common and iconic species such as the Yellowwood, Mountain Medlar, Buffalo-thorn, and Common Tree Fern, this book is ideal for hikers, birders, students, and plant lovers exploring the South African highlands and mountain escarpments. Its unique combination of scientific insight, local knowledge, and visual detail makes it an essential field companion for anyone wanting to understand and enjoy the trees of these regions.
