The Sea Fishes of Southern Africa by J. L. B. Smith is one of the most influential works ever published on the marine fishes of Southern Africa and remains an essential reference for collectors, marine biologists, anglers and natural history enthusiasts. First published in 1949, Smith’s pioneering research established this volume as the definitive work on the region’s marine fish fauna and secured its place among the classics of South African scientific literature.
Internationally renowned for identifying the living coelacanth, Professor J. L. B. Smith combined decades of field research with meticulous scientific observation to produce an authoritative guide to hundreds of marine fish species. Beautifully illustrated by Margaret M. Smith and other artists, The Sea Fishes of Southern Africa includes detailed species descriptions, identification keys and distributional information that continue to make it an important historical and scientific reference today.
This 1953 revised edition incorporates corrections and updates to the original work while retaining the qualities that have made it a standard reference for generations. Copies retaining the original dust jacket are considerably more desirable than those issued without one and are increasingly sought after by collectors of Africana, ichthyology, marine biology and natural history. Whether acquired for its scientific significance, historical importance or as an attractive shelf piece, The Sea Fishes of Southern Africa represents a cornerstone of South African publishing and remains one of the most desirable works on the subject.
An excellent addition to any collection of natural history, zoology, South African scientific literature or maritime history, this revised edition offers both lasting reference value and enduring collector appeal.
Condition – Very Good
1953 revised edition hardcover with the original dust jacket. The dust jacket shows moderate general wear with loss at the head and tail of the spine but remains complete enough to protect the binding and display well. The original green cloth boards are in very good condition with light edge wear, while the gilt decoration and spine lettering remain bright. Internally, the book is clean with only very light foxing. The binding is sound and the book presents well overall.
