Shadow of the Wild Hare by Marguerite Poland

Shadow of the Wild Hare by acclaimed South African author Marguerite Poland is a beautifully told children’s novel set on a farm in the Eastern Cape. First published in 1986 by David Philip, this edition is illustrated by noted South African artist and illustrator Leigh Voigt, whose artwork complements Poland’s evocative storytelling and strong sense of the South African landscape.

Shadow of the Wild Hare centres on Rosie, who rescues a rare wild hare from a trapper. Despite warnings from the mysterious Jacoba Pandoer that the animal can never truly be tamed, Rosie’s concern for the hare draws her, Skip and Willie into a series of unusual adventures. The story combines wildlife, rural life, adventure and a respect for the natural world, making it an engaging example of South African children’s literature.

Marguerite Poland is one of South Africa’s highly regarded writers and has produced works for both children and adults. Shadow of the Wild Hare is particularly appealing for collectors of her earlier children’s books and for readers interested in stories rooted in the Eastern Cape. Shadow of the Wild Hare has also been selected for South African school literature programmes, adding to its enduring educational interest.

This copy is especially desirable as the 1986 first edition, published by David Philip in Cape Town and Johannesburg and printed and bound in South Africa. The original illustrated wrappers feature distinctive Leigh Voigt artwork. A charming and increasingly collectable piece of South African children’s literature.
