Shadows on the Grass by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) is an evocative collection of African reminiscences from the celebrated Danish author best known for Out of Africa. Published under her famous pen name Isak Dinesen, Karen Blixen returns in this volume to the people, landscapes and experiences that shaped her years in Kenya and became central to her literary legacy.
Shadows on the Grass contains four pieces – Farah, Barua a Soldani, The Great Gesture and Echoes from the Hills – which together form a reflective continuation and final chapter to the African story begun in Out of Africa. The first three pieces originated during the 1950s, while Echoes from the Hills was written especially for the volume in 1960.
Blixen writes with a distinctive combination of observation, affection and literary elegance, recalling the personalities she encountered and the relationships that developed during her years in East Africa. Her memories encompass the African people among whom she lived, local customs and traditions, the colonial society of the period, and the striking natural landscape that surrounded her Kenyan coffee farm.
This 1988 Penguin Modern Classics edition is particularly suitable for readers and collectors interested in Karen Blixen, Isak Dinesen, classic African literature, Kenya, colonial-era East African history, travel writing and autobiographical literature. Shadows on the Grass also makes an excellent companion volume to Out of Africa, offering additional insight into the people and experiences that remained important to Blixen long after she returned to Denmark.
Shadows on the Grass is an appealing and highly readable modern classic with strong Africana and East African interest, written by one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated literary chroniclers of Kenya.
