Snakes of South West Africa by P. J. Buys and P. J. C. Buys is a regional herpetological reference first issued by Gamsberg Publishers in 1983. The book provides a detailed account of the snake fauna in what is today Namibia (formerly South West Africa), and draws on both field observations and taxonomic research to compile species descriptions, distribution data and ecological notes.
Within its pages, the authors systematically describe the region’s vipers, elapids, colubrids and other serpent groups, providing identification keys and morphological notes. The text emphasises the snakes’ natural history—habitat preferences, reproductive biology, behaviour—as well as interactions with humans. Illustrations, where included, support species recognition and contribute to ecological understanding. In addition, the book addresses practical concerns around snakebite by discussing venomous species in the region and first-aid considerations.
This volume is particularly significant for field researchers, conservationists and herpetologists working in southern Africa. Snakes of South West Africa remains a foundational work owing to its regional specificity and scientific credibility. As one of the more comprehensive guides to Namibian serpents from its time, it continues to serve as a resource for both academic study and public education about the herpetofauna of this vast and diverse landscape.
