Somewhere on the Border – A play

Somewhere on the Border by Anthony Akerman is a powerful and thought-provoking South African stage play that confronts the psychological and moral complexities of life during the apartheid era. First performed in the 1980s and later published in this 2012 edition, Somewhere on the Border remains one of the most significant theatrical works to emerge from South Africa’s period of political turmoil, offering a deeply human perspective on a divided society.

Set against the backdrop of the Angolan border conflict, Somewhere on the Border centres on a young white South African conscript whose mental state begins to unravel under the pressures of military service. Through this intensely personal narrative, Akerman explores themes of fear, indoctrination, identity, and resistance. The play examines how ordinary individuals are shaped—and often damaged—by the systems in which they are forced to operate.

What distinguishes Somewhere on the Border is its use of dark humour and satire to expose the absurdities and contradictions of apartheid ideology. Akerman’s writing is sharp and economical, with dialogue that captures both the tension and the emotional fragility of its characters. The play’s compact structure and focus on psychological conflict make it especially effective on stage, while also allowing it to resonate strongly as a text.

Somewhere on the Border is widely studied and performed, valued for its historical insight and enduring relevance. It is an essential work for students of drama, South African literature, and political theatre, offering a compelling exploration of conscience and conflict in a time of profound national crisis.
