South Africa at Home by Robert H. Fuller is a fascinating early twentieth-century portrait of South Africa during a transformative period in its history. Written by the former headmaster of Dale College, King William’s Town, this richly illustrated volume offers readers a contemporary account of life across the subcontinent, covering the Cape Colony, Natal, the Transvaal, the Orange River Colony, Rhodesia, Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland.
Rather than focusing solely on political events, Fuller presents a broad overview of everyday life, society, agriculture, industry, settlement, transport, education and commerce. Chapters explore topics ranging from the country’s geography and peoples to farming practices, frontier settlements, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Natal, Rhodesia and the rapidly expanding economic opportunities of the era. South Africa at Home provides valuable insight into how South Africa was perceived and presented during the years immediately preceding the First World War.
Illustrated with period photographs depicting landscapes, architecture, transport, farming and urban development, the book serves as both a historical record and an engaging travel narrative. Today South Africa at Home offers collectors, researchers and enthusiasts of Africana a unique window into the social attitudes, institutions and daily realities of southern Africa during the closing years of the colonial period.
An attractive and increasingly scarce Africana title, South Africa at Home remains an important resource for those interested in South African history, colonial studies, genealogy, local history and the development of the region during the early twentieth century.
