South African Fish & Fishing: Illustrated Story of the Fishing Industry, published by Irvin & Johnson in Cape Town in 1963, is a fascinating vintage account of South Africa’s commercial fishing industry and the marine resources upon which it was built. Produced by one of the country’s best-known historic fishing companies, this substantial illustrated hardcover provides an evocative record of an important period in South African maritime and industrial history. The National Archives of South Africa records the 1963 Cape Town edition in its Jeffreys Book Collection.
South African Fish & Fishing explores how fish were located and caught in the waters surrounding Southern Africa, as well as the methods used to preserve, transport and process the catch and the organisation of the fishing industry. It combines information on commercial fishing with illustrations and colour depictions of South African fish, making it appealing not only to anglers but also to collectors interested in marine biology, fisheries, maritime history and South African industry. Contemporary bibliographical descriptions note numerous colour illustrations and photographs, including colour images of fish.
The attractive period dust jacket features a dramatic photograph of the fishing vessel George Irvin underway with signal flags flying, while the red hardcover binding beneath carries gilt decoration and gilt titling to the spine. The combination of fishing vessels, commercial fisheries, marine species and period photography gives South African Fish & Fishing considerable nostalgic appeal.
