A superior-condition South African Railways Handbook from the steam era, complete with acknowledgement page and clean covers—an increasingly scarce survival from the working railway environment.
1 in stock
This 1956 Railways Handbook on the Steam Locomotive for Enginemen and Running Shed Staff represents a notably better-preserved example of an increasingly scarce SAR technical manual. Printed by The Government Printer in Pretoria, these handbooks were originally issued to locomotive crews and shed staff as practical, working documents—meaning that most surviving copies today show heavy wear or have missing components.
What distinguishes this example is the presence of the original acknowledgement of receipt page, which is often removed once issued to staff. Its survival here strongly suggests that this copy may not have been formally issued for active duty, contributing to its cleaner overall appearance. The red paper covers remain relatively bright and intact compared to typical examples, adding to its visual and collectible appeal.
The Railways Handbook itself is a detailed and practical guide to steam locomotive operation and maintenance, covering key areas such as combustion, boiler management, cylinders, valves, lubrication, braking systems, and operational procedures. The latter portion of the Railways Handbook (pages 135–239) is dedicated to technical diagrams and tables, offering valuable insight into the mechanical workings of steam locomotives, including components like mechanical stokers.
A highly desirable piece for collectors of South African Railways material, Africana, and industrial history—particularly in this more complete and better-preserved state.
Condition – Very Good
Soft paper covers are clean and well-preserved overall, with only light dirt marks. Edges are shelf worn and slightly curled. The original acknowledgement of receipt page is present and intact. Internally, foxing is present throughout, particularly on the early and later pages, with some age-related toning. A well-preserved example relative to typical working copies.
