A Revision of the South African Species of Juncus by R. S. Adamson

A Revision of the South African Species of Juncus by Professor R. S. Adamson is an important early South African botanical study originally published in 1935 in The Journal of the Linnean Society of London – Botany, Volume 50, No. 333. The paper was read before the Linnean Society on 1 March 1934 and comprises 38 pages devoted specifically to the South African representatives of the genus Juncus, commonly known as rushes.

Adamson undertook Revision of the South African Species of Juncus following extensive investigation of Juncus species occurring throughout the Union of South Africa. His research incorporated both field observations and the examination of specimens held in major botanical herbaria and collections. The work addresses the identification, classification and distribution of South African species, including difficulties arising from variation within individual species and similarities between related plants.

Published by the Linnean Society of London, with Longmans, Green & Co. Ltd., this original 1935 botanical paper represents a fascinating period in the development of systematic botanical research in southern Africa. Its highly specialised South African subject matter makes it particularly appealing to collectors and researchers interested in South African flora, botanical taxonomy, Juncaceae, Cape botany and historical natural history publications.
