An interesting four-item South African wildlife, birding and national parks reference bundle, bringing together useful guides covering the Kruger National Park as well as the important Zululand and Maputaland wildlife reserves of KwaZulu-Natal. An appealing group for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, conservation collectors, tourists and anyone building a reference library on South Africa’s protected natural areas.
South African Wildlife includes Maps of the Zululand and Maputaland Reserves, published by Honeyguide Publications. This illustrated guide covers Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Ithala, Ndumo, Tembe, Kosi Bay/Sodwana Bay, uMkhuze and Lake St Lucia/iSimangaliso. It combines reserve mapping with illustrated animal and bird identification and is particularly useful as a historical record of the region’s tourism and conservation infrastructure. The identified edition carries ISBN 9780958474870.
Also included is The Prime Origins Guide to The Killer Birds of Kruger by Brett Hilton-Barber and Lou Arthur, a specialised field guide devoted to the birds of prey of the Kruger National Park. Illustrated with photography by Albert Froneman and artwork by Chip Snaddon, this approximately 48-page A4 guide includes a raptor checklist and covers the identification and observation of Kruger’s predatory birds.
Completing the collection are two illustrated Kruger National Park WWF guides: Find It and Bushveld Seasons. These attractive publications explore the park’s wider natural history, including wildlife, birds, vegetation, insects, reptiles, geology, ecology and the seasonal changes that shape the Lowveld environment.
Together, these four publications make a particularly useful Southern African natural history and ecotourism bundle, combining maps, bird identification, raptors, South African Wildlife and bushveld ecology.
