Soweto – Portrait of a City by Peter Magubane

Soweto – Portrait of a City by Peter Magubane is an iconic photographic publication that offers a deeply moving visual account of life in Soweto during one of the most turbulent and transformative periods in South African history. Published in 1990 by Struik Publishers, this large-format hardcover stands as both an artistic achievement and a vital historical document.

Magubane, one of South Africa’s most celebrated photojournalists, spent decades documenting apartheid-era realities, often at great personal risk. In this work, his lens captures the complexity of Soweto—its hardships, humanity, resistance, and hope. From scenes of daily township life to moments of protest and faith, each photograph contributes to a compelling narrative that resonates far beyond its time.

Soweto – Portrait of a City features a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, adding significant historical and moral weight, while the accompanying text by Stan Motjuwadi and David Bristow contextualises the imagery within the broader socio-political landscape.

Highly collectible, Soweto – Portrait of a City is sought after by collectors of Africana, struggle history, and documentary photography. Its striking visual content and historical importance make it an essential addition to any serious collection or library focused on South African heritage.
