A fascinating reproduction of the official Pilot’s Notes for the Supermarine Spitfire IIA and IIB Aeroplanes fitted with the Rolls-Royce Merlin XII engine, originally issued as Air Publication AP 1565B for official RAF use.
These pilot’s notes were produced to familiarise pilots with the operation, controls, systems and handling of one of Britain’s most celebrated Second World War fighter aircraft. The publication contains technical information relating to the Spitfire’s cockpit controls, fuel system, engine operation and associated aircraft systems, accompanied by detailed diagrams and fold-out illustrations. Particularly attractive is the large fold-out illustration of the Spitfire II aeroplane, showing the aircraft with numerous components and controls identified.
Pilot’s Notes for the Supermarine Spitfire IIA and IIB Aeroplanes also retains its amendment certificate pages, with handwritten entries recording the incorporation of various amendment lists. These details give the publication much of the appearance and working character of the wartime manuals upon which it was based.
The cover carries the prominent markings “For Official Use Only,” “Air Publication 1565B,” and “Pilot’s Notes – Spitfire IIA and IIB Aeroplanes – Merlin XII Engine.” It also states that Crown copyright material was reproduced with permission of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, confirming that this is a later reproduction rather than an original wartime issue.
An appealing piece for collectors of Spitfire memorabilia, RAF history, Rolls-Royce Merlin material, military aviation manuals and Second World War aviation ephemera.
Condition – Good
Thin booklet-style publication bound through punched holes with green cord. The metal cord ends are rusty, with associated staining and wear around the binding area. Covers show toning, creasing, edge wear and small losses. Internally generally sound, with fold-out technical illustrations present and handwritten amendment entries.
