Published to mark the centenary of one of South Africa’s most prestigious schools, St. Andrew’s College Grahamstown 1855-1955 is an authoritative and richly detailed history written by R. F. Currey. Issued in 1955 by Basil Blackwell of Oxford, this commemorative volume traces the first hundred years of St. Andrew’s College, documenting its foundation, growth, traditions, academic achievements, sporting successes and contribution to South African society.
Drawing upon school records, correspondence, personal recollections and archival material, Currey presents a fascinating account of life at the renowned Eastern Cape institution from its establishment in 1855 through to its centenary celebrations. St. Andrew’s College Grahamstown 1855-1955 provides valuable insight into the development of education in colonial and modern South Africa, while also preserving the stories of influential headmasters, teachers, pupils and benefactors who shaped the school’s identity.
Illustrated with numerous historical photographs and reproductions, the volume serves as both a scholarly reference and a nostalgic record for former pupils and those connected to the college. St. Andrew’s College Grahamstown 1855-1955 is also an important source for collectors of Africana, South African educational history, Anglican history and Eastern Cape heritage.
This example is particularly desirable, retaining its original unclipped dust jacket. The blue cloth binding remains bright and attractive with the school crest in gilt, while the contents are exceptionally clean and well preserved. Light foxing is confined to the text block edges, and the dust jacket shows only light signs of age and handling. Copies in such well-preserved condition, especially with an unclipped jacket, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
An excellent addition to any collection of Africana, South African history, educational institutions, school memorabilia or Grahamstown/Makhanda historical material.
