Steam in the Western Highlands, edited by Jack Kernahan and published by D. Bradford Barton Ltd in 1978, is a fascinating photographic record of steam railway operations across the spectacular Western Highlands of Scotland.
Featuring approximately 120 historical black-and-white railway photographs accompanied by informative captions, Steam in the Western Highlands illustrated volume documents the locomotives, passenger services, railway infrastructure and distinctive atmosphere of Scottish Highland steam railways. The photographs capture trains travelling alongside lochs, through mountain valleys and across the rugged countryside that made the West Highland railway routes particularly memorable.
Steam in the Western Highlands provides an absorbing visual journey through the steam railway heritage of western Scotland, including the celebrated West Highland Line and its connections with communities such as Fort William and Mallaig.
Condition – Very Good
1978 hardcover with original illustrated dust jacket. Black boards with gilt lettering to the spine remain in very good condition, with light signs of age and handling. The dust jacket displays minor edge and shelf wear. Internally the pages appear clean and well preserved. A handwritten inscription appears near the upper edge of the front free endpaper. Importantly, a sizeable section of the upper portion of this endpaper has been cut away, immediately to the left of the inscription, leaving an obvious angular cut-out. This alteration is clearly visible. The book otherwise presents well.
