Stonehenge Complete by Christopher Chippindale is a large-format illustrated study of Britain’s most famous prehistoric monument, published by Thames and Hudson. First published in Great Britain in 1983, it appeared as a paperback in 1987, and this copy is the 1989 reprint of that paperback edition, printed and bound in Yugoslavia.
Rather than offering a single theory, Stonehenge Complete follows the monument through the centuries and the people who tried to make sense of it. The contents run in seventeen chapters, opening with Stonehenge as seen by the medieval eye and moving through the age of Queen Elizabeth, the English Revolution, Mr Aubrey, the Druid enthusiasm, Victorian visitors and the years from 1900 onward, before turning to the archaeological links from Wessex to Mycenae, astronomy, alternative visions and the preservation of the site. A section on visiting Stonehenge, further reading, notes, sources of illustrations and an index complete the book.
The book is generously illustrated throughout. The preliminary pages alone include Bill Brandt’s classic 1947 photograph of Stonehenge in the snow, a view inside the ruined sarsen building, and the Stonehenge emblem used by the Sarsen Press of Redwood City, California, a nod to the monument’s place in popular culture.
This is a rewarding title for anyone interested in British prehistory, archaeology and the history of ideas, as well as readers drawn to ancient monuments, archaeoastronomy and the stories that have grown up around stone circles. It sits well on the shelf of collectors of archaeology books and makes an excellent reference for students and travellers planning a visit to Salisbury Plain.
