Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz

Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz is a delightful and imaginative collection of stories inspired by one of the most fascinating creatures in Southern African folklore. Beautifully illustrated by Cherie Treweek, this charming 2004 paperback introduces readers to the mischievous Tokoloshe — a mythical sprite known throughout African legend for its magical powers, trickery, and unpredictable adventures.

In Tales of the Tokoloshe, the Tokoloshe uses a magical pebble to disappear and transform himself into various creatures, leading to a series of humorous, suspenseful, and imaginative escapades. Combining fantasy, folklore, and adventure, the stories capture the rich oral storytelling traditions of Southern Africa while remaining accessible and engaging for younger readers and collectors alike.

Pieter Scholtz, a respected playwright and Emeritus Professor of Drama from the University of Natal, brings warmth and theatrical flair to these stories. The vivid illustrations by Cherie Treweek further enhance the whimsical atmosphere, making Tales of the Tokoloshe especially appealing as both a reading copy and a collectible example of South African children’s literature.

Published by Struik Publishers in 2004, this paperback edition is increasingly difficult to find in good condition, particularly within the South African market. Tales of the Tokoloshe appeals to collectors of Africana, folklore, mythology, illustrated books, and children’s fantasy fiction. A wonderful addition to any collection focusing on African storytelling traditions or culturally significant South African literature.
