Textbook of Dendrology: Covering the Important Forest Trees of the United States and Canada by William M. Harlow and Ellwood S. Harrar is a classic mid-20th-century reference work devoted to the scientific study and identification of North American trees. This 1941 Second Edition, Third Impression was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company as part of the respected American Forestry Series.
Written by two noted forestry academics, William M. Harlow of the New York State College of Forestry and Ellwood S. Harrar of Duke University’s School of Forestry, Textbook of Dendrology provides a systematic treatment of the important forest trees of the United States and Canada. Dendrology – the scientific study of woody plants, particularly trees and shrubs – is fundamental to forestry, botany, woodland management and the identification of timber species.
This substantial 542-page hardcover was produced as a practical academic textbook and reference for forestry students, professionals and naturalists. Textbook of Dendrology combines botanical information with the practical requirements of forestry and wood technology, making it particularly interesting as both a historical scientific text and a specialist reference.
Published more than 80 years ago, this 1941 edition also offers an insight into the teaching and practice of North American forestry during the first half of the twentieth century.
