The 1820 Settlers by Lynne Bryer and Keith S. Hunt is an attractive illustrated volume examining one of the most significant episodes in nineteenth-century South African history: the arrival and settlement of British immigrants in the Eastern Cape in 1820. Published as part of Don Nelson’s Heritage Series: 19th Century, the book provides an accessible and visually engaging account of the settlers, the circumstances that brought them to southern Africa, the challenges they encountered and the lasting influence of their communities.
The authors place the settlement within its wider historical setting, exploring the experiences of families who left Britain for the Cape Colony and attempted to establish new lives in an unfamiliar and often difficult environment. The 1820 Settlers draws on historical records and incorporates period illustrations, paintings and other archival material, making it particularly appealing to readers interested in Africana, genealogy, colonial history, Eastern Cape history and South African social history.
Research assistance for the publication drew on important South African historical collections and institutions, including the Cory Library for Historical Research, Albany Museum and other archival repositories. The 1820 Settlers is consequently useful both as an introductory history and as an attractive addition to an Africana collection.
This is the 1984 first edition, published in Cape Town by Don Nelson. The 1820 Settlers comprises approximately 80 pages and is presented in hardcover with its original illustrated dust jacket. Its large-format presentation makes particularly good use of the historical visual material.
Condition – Very Good
The binding appears firm and the interior generally clean. There is some light age-related spotting/foxing visible to the endpaper area. The dust jacket shows light shelf and edge wear, including minor rubbing and small marks consistent with age and handling.
