The Afrikaner Bond: The History of a South African Political Party, 1880–1911 by T. R. H. Davenport is an important scholarly study of one of the most influential political organisations in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century South African history. Published by Oxford University Press in Cape Town in 1966, this first edition examines the origins, development, ideology and political influence of the Afrikaner Bond during a period of profound transformation in southern Africa.
The Afrikaner Bond emerged during the late nineteenth century as an increasingly important vehicle for Afrikaner political organisation, particularly within the Cape Colony. Davenport traces the movement’s development against the background of British imperialism, growing Afrikaner nationalism, agricultural and economic interests, relations between the Cape and the Boer republics, and the political upheavals that ultimately culminated in the South African War and the creation of the Union of South Africa.
The Afrikaner Bond considers significant political personalities and movements while examining the complicated relationship between cultural identity, nationalism and practical parliamentary politics. Its chronological scope from 1880 to 1911 encompasses some of the most consequential decades in the formation of modern South Africa.
Written while Davenport was Reader in History at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, The Afrikaner Bond remains a valuable specialist reference for students and collectors of Afrikaner history, Cape political history, South African nationalism, British imperial history and Africana.
