This luxurious Subscribers’ Edition of The Aloes of Tropical Africa and Madagascar is a landmark botanical work and a true collector’s treasure. Published in 1966 by the Trustees of the Aloes of Africa Book Fund, this edition was produced in strictly limited numbers for subscribers only and is handsomely bound in full leather, with raised bands, gilt titling to the spine, and all page edges gilt. It exudes the craftsmanship and scholarly reverence of a bygone era.
Gilbert Westacott Reynolds, a South African ophthalmologist turned pioneering aloe botanist, devoted much of his life to the study of the Aloe genus across Africa. The Aloes of Tropical Africa and Madagascar is the culmination of years of exploration, fieldwork, and correspondence, capturing over 200 species of aloes found throughout tropical Africa and Madagascar. The text is both scientifically rigorous and accessible, presenting detailed botanical descriptions, notes on habitat and distribution, and often personal observations from Reynolds’ travels.
The book is illustrated throughout with finely rendered botanical line drawings that showcase the structural detail of each species, as well as a series of vibrant colour plates that bring these extraordinary succulents to life. Each illustration is executed with remarkable precision, contributing to the volume’s lasting value as both a scientific reference and a work of visual art.
As a companion to Reynolds’ earlier The Aloes of South Africa (1950), this volume broadens the botanical horizon, covering regions seldom documented in such depth at the time. Together, the two works represent the most exhaustive mid-20th-century record of Aloe species on the continent.
This Subscribers’ Edition of The Aloes of Tropical Africa and Madagascar is rarely seen on the market today, especially in such fine condition, and holds enduring appeal for collectors of Africana, natural history, fine bindings, and botanical literature.
