The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight by Bill Taylor is an extensively illustrated history and photographic celebration of one of the Royal Air Force’s most famous historic flying units. Published by Midland Publishing Limited in 1995, this 84-page volume documents the aircraft, personnel and traditions associated with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and its continuing role in preserving Britain’s military aviation heritage.
The BBMF traces its origins to the Historic Aircraft Flight established at RAF Biggin Hill in July 1957, initially comprising three Spitfires and the RAF’s last airworthy Hurricane, LF363. It subsequently developed into the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, preserving and operating some of Britain’s most celebrated Second World War aircraft.
Illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-white photographs, this volume covers famous aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Avro Lancaster, together with the people responsible for maintaining and flying these historic machines. It offers an accessible visual record of the Flight and will appeal particularly to collectors of RAF, Battle of Britain, Second World War and historic aviation material.
This particular copy has an additional element of interest. Written on the opening page is “Peter Sargent, B.B.M.F. Coltishall, 1964–1972”, together with an affixed commemorative stamp depicting R. J. Mitchell (1895–1937), designer of the Supermarine Spitfire. The inscription appears to associate the former owner with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight during its Coltishall period. This should be treated as interesting provenance rather than a verified BBMF service record unless further documentary evidence becomes available.
An attractive collectable copy with considerably more character than the standard example, particularly suitable for an aviation enthusiast or specialist RAF collection.
Condition – Good
The pictorial covers remain bright and attractive with light handling and shelf wear. Binding appears sound and the pages are clean and well preserved. There is a handwritten former ownership/provenance inscription together with a commemorative stamp.
