The Big Fisherman by Lloyd C. Douglas (1949 First Edition)

This is a highly collectible first edition of The Big Fisherman by Lloyd C. Douglas, published in 1949 by Peter Davies, London. Best known as the author of The Robe, Douglas became one of the most widely read writers of biblical and Christian historical fiction during the mid-20th century, and first editions of his major works remain increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide.

The Big Fisherman is an ambitious biblical epic centred around Simon Peter, the Galilean fisherman who would become one of the foundational figures of early Christianity. Combining historical imagination with spiritual narrative, Douglas creates a vivid portrayal of life in the ancient Near East during the time of Christ. Rich in atmosphere and character development, the novel explores themes of faith, redemption, loyalty, and transformation in a style that made Douglas internationally famous.

This particular copy of The Big Fisherman is especially desirable as it is clearly marked “First Published 1949,” confirming it as the true first edition rather than a later impression or reprint. Early Lloyd C. Douglas editions are increasingly difficult to source in attractive condition, especially in South Africa. The novel’s enduring popularity was further enhanced by the successful 1959 film adaptation, ensuring continued collector and reader interest.

An excellent addition to collections of biblical fiction, Christian literature, vintage first editions, and mid-century historical novels.
