The Birds of Southern Mozambique by P. A. Clancey is an important specialist reference on the avifauna of southern Mozambique and a valuable addition to any collection of African ornithology, natural history or regional bird books. First developed from Clancey’s earlier A Handlist of the Birds of Southern Mozambique, the substantially revised and updated edition was published by African Bird Book Publishing in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1996.
Phillip A. Clancey was one of southern Africa’s most prolific and influential ornithologists, with a career devoted particularly to the taxonomy and geographical variation of African birds. His earlier handlist of southern Mozambique was published in the early 1970s and provided an important foundation for subsequent research into the region’s birdlife.
Rather than being simply a conventional field guide, this work is more accurately described as a regional avifauna. It examines the distribution of recorded species, together with their ranges and habitat preferences, and incorporates distribution maps, colour plates, photographs and a gazetteer of place names. The 1996 edition contains 312 pages, 49 colour plates, six photographs and 39 maps.
Southern Mozambique is an especially interesting ornithological region, encompassing a mixture of coastal habitats, woodland, forest, wetlands and other environments supporting a diverse bird community. Clancey’s detailed treatment provides historical documentation of this avifauna and remains useful for researchers, serious birders and collectors interested in the development of ornithological knowledge in Mozambique.
The Birds of Southern Mozambique is therefore much more than an identification book. It is a substantial record of regional bird distribution and habitat, reflecting Clancey’s extensive taxonomic expertise and the state of ornithological knowledge at the end of the twentieth century. It will appeal particularly to enthusiasts of African birds, Mozambique, southern African natural history and specialist ornithological literature.
