The Birds of Southern Rhodesia by Cecil D. Priest is an important and substantial early African ornithological reference work, published across four volumes between 1933 and 1936 by William Clowes and Sons, Limited in London. The set is widely regarded as one of the major pre-war studies of the birdlife of what is now Zimbabwe, combining detailed species accounts with observations on nesting, distribution, habits, and field identification.
The work was issued as follows:
The complete set extends to roughly 1,800 pages and includes a folding map, numerous text illustrations, and 40 colour plates, many prepared from artwork by Norman Lighton, whose illustrations also appeared in early editions of Roberts Birds of South Africa.
For collectors, The Birds of Southern Rhodesia is highly desirable within Rhodesiana, Africana, and ornithology collecting circles, especially when found complete with all colour plates, the folding map, and original cloth bindings. Sets retaining original dust jackets or signed volumes command stronger prices. Auction and dealer records show values varying considerably according to condition and completeness, from relatively affordable reading sets to much higher prices for fine or signed examples.
