Published in 1999 to accompany the Channel 4 television series of the same name, The Boer War by Tabitha Jackson is an extensively illustrated account of the South African War of 1899–1902, one of the defining conflicts of British imperial and South African history. Drawing on historical research, contemporary testimony, letters, diaries and an impressive selection of period photographs, Jackson examines the conflict from a broad social as well as military perspective.
The book traces the war from the initial expectation of a rapid British victory through the unexpectedly effective Boer resistance, major battles and guerrilla campaign, and the increasingly severe British counter-insurgency measures. Particular attention is given to the experiences of ordinary soldiers and civilians caught up in the conflict. The concentration camp system, scorched-earth policies and the devastating impact of the war on families and communities are explored alongside conventional military history.
Importantly, Jackson also considers the experiences and participation of black South Africans, challenging the once-common portrayal of the conflict as exclusively a “white man’s war”. This broader approach makes the book particularly useful to readers interested in Africana, colonial history, British imperial history and the complex origins of twentieth-century South Africa.
Generously illustrated throughout with historical photographs and archival material, The Boer War offers an accessible yet substantial introduction to the conflict. A worthwhile addition to any collection of Anglo-Boer War, South African military history or Africana books.
