The Botany Of The Southern Natal Drakensberg

The Botany of the Southern Natal Drakensberg by O. M. Hilliard & B. L. Burtt is a definitive botanical reference for one of South Africa’s most spectacular and ecologically important mountain regions. This volume offers a detailed survey of the flora found in the southern Drakensberg region of Natal, including plant species descriptions, habitat notes, ecological context, and the geographic distribution of southern-Drakensberg vegetation. It serves as an essential guide for botanists, ecologists, conservationists, and anyone interested in the rich biodiversity of South Africa’s montane environments.

Within The Botany Of The Southern Natal Drakensberg, Hilliard and Burtt combine scientific rigor with clear, accessible writing: plant species are described with morphological detail, accompanied by ecological information about their preferred habitats, altitudinal ranges, and seasonal behaviour. The work contextualises each species within the broader ecology of the Drakensberg — including vegetation zones, soil types, climate gradients, and conservation concerns. This makes it highly valuable for fieldwork, research, academic reference, or conservation planning across the region.

As a publication from the National Botanic Gardens, the volume is both authoritative and regionally grounded. For collectors of southern African natural history, libraries specialising in botany or ecology, or individuals involved in land management and conservation, The Botany of the Southern Natal Drakensberg stands out as a fundamental reference — a thoughtful, well-researched, and region-specific botanical work that captures the unique plant life of one of South Africa’s most iconic mountain ranges.
