The Canaries, Seedeaters and Buntings of Southern Africa contains 152 pages, preceded by introductory material, and features 19 colour plates, 50 black-and-white photographic illustrations, 18 distribution maps and a diagram. The beautifully executed bird illustrations include artwork by C. G. Davies and other noted natural history artists.
Of particular interest are the distribution maps and detailed species descriptions, which offer insight into bird populations and scientific knowledge during the mid-twentieth century.
This out-of-print first edition is particularly appealing to collectors of South African ornithological literature, Africana, vintage natural history books and illustrated bird references. The Canaries, Seedeaters and Buntings of Southern Africa also provides a fascinating historical companion to modern Southern African bird identification guides and taxonomic studies.
