Limited edition reprint of the first volume of The Central African Planter (1895–1896), an important primary source documenting plantation agriculture, trade, and colonial development in British Central Africa (Malawi).
1 in stock
A fascinating and increasingly scarce Africana reference work, The Central African Planter reproduces Volume I of the influential monthly journal published between September 1895 and August 1896 in what was then British Central Africa, now Malawi. Edited by R. S. Hynde and originally issued by Hynde & Stark of Zomba, the publication served as a practical and commercial record of plantation enterprise, agricultural development, trade, transport, labour, and colonial expansion in the region during the late nineteenth century.
This 1983 illustrated edition was produced by the Society of Malawi and is limited to just 1,000 numbered copies, of which this example is number 295. The Central African Planter provides valuable primary source material relating to the development of coffee, tea and other plantation industries, commercial ventures, colonial administration, and everyday life in British Central Africa. Researchers interested in Malawi, Nyasaland, African economic history, imperial studies, agricultural development, and colonial-era commerce will find this an exceptionally useful reference.
The Central African Planter also contains period advertisements, reports, commentary and contemporary observations that offer unique insight into the social and economic conditions of the region at the end of the nineteenth century. Such titles are increasingly sought after by collectors of Africana, Rhodesiana, Central African history, and specialist colonial publications.
A scarce limited-edition reprint of an important historical source documenting the formative years of British Central Africa and its plantation economy.
