The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals

The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals by Gus Mills and Lex Hes, first published in 1997, is a landmark reference work that presents a richly detailed and visually striking overview of the mammalian fauna of Southern Africa. Issued in a sturdy Hardcover format and often housed in an illustrated slipcase, the book brings together the expertise of over 70 of the region’s leading mammalogists to offer authoritative information on all 343 known species found in Southern Africa at the time of publication.

Each species is profiled with information on its distribution and conservation status, preferred habitats, physical characteristics, vocalizations, diet, breeding habits, and social behaviour. These profiles are accompanied by high-quality full-colour photographs that capture the animals in their natural environments, as well as distribution maps to support field identification.

The book is divided into three major sections: land mammals, marine mammals such as whales and dolphins, and introduced (exotic) species. In addition to the species accounts, the book features insightful introductory chapters that explore the evolution and classification of mammals, their ecological roles, behavioural adaptations, and the challenges they face in the modern landscape. A glossary, references for further reading, and species names in multiple regional languages further enhance its value as a comprehensive and accessible resource.

Beautifully produced and scientifically rigorous, The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals remains a vital addition to the libraries of wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and conservationists with an interest in the rich biodiversity of the subcontinent.
