The Deltic Locomotives of British Rail by Brian Webb is a fascinating and thoroughly researched account of one of Britain’s most celebrated classes of diesel-electric locomotives. Published in 1982 by David & Charles as part of their respected Locomotive Studies series, this illustrated hardcover explores the remarkable engineering, development and operational history of the famous English Electric Deltic locomotives.
The book traces the story from the revolutionary DP1 prototype of 1955 through the smaller Class 23 Baby Deltics to the powerful Class 55 locomotives that transformed express passenger services on British Rail’s East Coast Main Line. With their distinctive twin Napier Deltic engines and impressive 3,300 horsepower output, these machines represented a significant technological advancement in British railway history.
Railway historian Brian Webb examines the design challenges, technical innovations, operational difficulties and subsequent improvements that characterised these remarkable locomotives. Drawing upon extensive historical research and official railway records, the author provides valuable insights into the development and performance of the Deltics during the transition from steam to diesel traction.
The book also explores the important contribution of the Class 55 locomotives to long-distance passenger services between London, Yorkshire, Newcastle and Scotland, establishing their place among the most recognisable locomotives of the British Rail era.
Illustrated with black-and-white railway photographs, this specialist publication offers an informative combination of technical history and railway nostalgia.
An appealing addition to any collection of British railway books, diesel locomotive histories or railway engineering publications, The Deltic Locomotives of British Rail will particularly interest railway enthusiasts, locomotive historians, transport researchers and collectors of vintage railway literature.
