Graeme Pope-Ellis: The Dusi King by Clive Lawrance

Graeme Pope-Ellis: The Dusi King by Clive Lawrance is a fascinating biography of one of South Africa’s greatest canoeing legends and one of the most successful competitors in the history of the iconic Dusi Canoe Marathon. Published in 1986, this scarce first edition chronicles the life, determination, training methods and racing achievements of Graeme Pope-Ellis, whose name became synonymous with endurance paddling in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Dusi King provides readers with an insider’s look at the demanding world of marathon canoeing, the history and evolution of the Dusi race, and the extraordinary physical and mental resilience required to dominate one of the world’s toughest river races. Lawrance combines sporting history with personal anecdotes and memorable race accounts, creating an engaging biography that appeals equally to paddling enthusiasts and readers interested in South African sporting history.

Illustrated with photographs documenting Pope-Ellis’s career, The Dusi King captures an important era in South African canoeing before the sport gained wider international recognition. As a regional publication by Pietermaritzburg publisher Shuter & Shooter, it has become increasingly difficult to source, particularly in complete first edition form.

The Dusi King is an excellent addition to collections focusing on South African sport, KwaZulu-Natal history, river canoeing, adventure sports and sporting biographies. It also makes an ideal gift for Dusi Canoe Marathon participants, paddling clubs, and collectors of scarce South African publications.
