The Elite Pictorial: Rhodesian Special Air Service (Signed by Barbara Cole)

The Elite Pictorial: Rhodesian Special Air Service is a photographic work documenting the Rhodesian Special Air Service (SAS), an elite military unit that operated during the Rhodesian Bush War. Published by Three Knights in 1986, this book offers an important visual record of a distinctive chapter in Southern African military history.

The Rhodesian SAS developed a reputation for specialised reconnaissance, long-range operations and unconventional warfare. Its history is closely connected to the conflict that preceded Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. For readers interested in military history, the Rhodesian Bush War and the evolution of special forces in Southern Africa, The Elite Pictorial: Rhodesian Special Air Service provides a subject-specific addition to a military history collection.

As its title suggests, the book’s pictorial emphasis makes it particularly appealing to collectors and readers interested in photographic documentation of military personnel, equipment and operations. Works of this kind can also offer valuable historical context for researchers examining the organisation, appearance and public representation of Rhodesian military units during the final years of white-minority rule.

The pictorial edition is also significant for its place in the publishing history of Barbara Cole’s wider account of the regiment. The original The Elite appeared in 1984, followed by this illustrated edition in 1986. The book includes historical material on the unit’s development, with supporting reference features such as a roll of honour, glossary and index.

This copy has an additional point of interest: it is signed by Barbara Cole, making it especially appealing to collectors of signed military books and Rhodesiana. The combination of its photographic focus, specialist subject matter and connection to a South African publishing history gives The Elite Pictorial: Rhodesian Special Air Service particular appeal to enthusiasts of military history and collectors of books on Southern Africa’s past.

Whether sought for its historical content, pictorial record or signed status, The Elite Pictorial: Rhodesian Special Air Service is a notable title for anyone building a collection devoted to the Rhodesian Bush War, special forces or the military history of the region.
