The Enchanted Forest

The Enchanted Forest by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, in its 1987 Salem House Publishers edition, is a classic illustrated children’s book that brings to life a magical tale of wonder, fantasy, and faerie‑folk enchantment. Although the story was originally published in the early 20th century—with the first printing dated 1921 through A. & C. Black—this Salem House Publishers 1987 edition preserves that timeless charm with richly detailed illustrations and a narrative that has delighted readers for generations.

In The Enchanted Forest, readers follow young Anne, who, after an unexpected fall from her horse, finds herself immersed in a forest teeming with elves, fairies, goblins, and dancing bears. Guided by her loyal rabbit companion, Potty, Anne navigates the wonders and mysteries of this mystical realm. The story unfolds through evocative illustrations paired with lyrical prose, creating a uniquely immersive experience that invites readers—both young and young at heart—into a world where magic feels tangible and enduring.

What makes The Enchanted Forest especially memorable is Outhwaite’s extraordinary artwork. Her delicate pen and watercolour renderings define the visual heart of the narrative, bringing each character and woodland scene to vibrant life with an ethereal grace. Outhwaite is celebrated as one of the early masters of fairy illustration, and her work in this book exemplifies that legacy by merging storytelling with visual enchantment in a way that continues to captivate readers well beyond childhood.

For collectors, families, and lovers of classic illustrated fiction, The Enchanted Forest is a treasured addition to any bookshelf. It stands as both a nostalgic piece of literary art and a perpetual source of wonder for new generations discovering its magic.
