The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood is Elspeth Huxley’s celebrated memoir of growing up in Kenya during the final years before the First World War. First published by Chatto & Windus in London in 1959, this first edition is a desirable edition of one of the best-known literary memoirs of colonial East Africa. The first edition runs to 288 pages and includes illustrations and a frontispiece.
Huxley was born in 1907 and spent part of her childhood on her parents’ coffee farm near Thika, in what was then British East Africa. Her family’s experiences as pioneering settlers provide the setting for the memoir, which recreates the practical difficulties, uncertainties and adventures of establishing a farm in an unfamiliar environment. The narrative draws heavily on her childhood memories, combining personal observation with vivid descriptions of the Kenyan landscape and the people around her.
A major strength of the book is Huxley’s eye for detail. She recalls the family’s attempts to establish themselves, their encounters with neighbouring settlers, and their interactions with the Kikuyu and Maasai communities. The result is both a personal account of childhood and a valuable literary record of a particular period in Kenya’s colonial history.
The Flame Trees of Thika: is particularly notable for its sense of place. Huxley evokes the landscape, wildlife, weather and everyday realities of life on a remote farm, while maintaining an engaging narrative centred on family life and childhood experience. The book subsequently became widely known and was adapted into a television series in 1981, starring Hayley Mills and Ben Cross.
For collectors of Africana, African memoirs, Kenyan history and twentieth-century travel and colonial literature, this 1959 first edition represents an important edition of Huxley’s work. The Flame Trees of Thika: is especially appealing to readers interested in firsthand literary accounts of early twentieth-century Kenya and the history of European settlement in East Africa. First-edition copies are recorded in the rare-book market, with examples appearing in original cloth bindings and, where present, the original dust jacket.
