The Geese of Beaver Bog by Bernd Heinrich

The Geese of Beaver Bog by acclaimed naturalist and biologist Bernd Heinrich is a captivating exploration of the hidden world of Canada geese and the delicate ecosystems they inhabit. Combining scientific insight with lyrical storytelling, Heinrich invites readers into the marshes, ponds, and reed beds surrounding the beaver bog near his home, where he closely observes the behaviour, migration, nesting habits, and social interactions of these remarkable birds.

Far more than a standard ornithological study, this book is an intimate narrative that reflects Heinrich’s deep connection with the natural world. His observations began after becoming the foster parent to an abandoned gosling, leading him into a deeper understanding of goose society and wetland ecology. The result is The Geese of Beaver Bog – an engaging work that balances rigorous scientific curiosity with warmth, humour, and genuine wonder.

Richly descriptive and highly accessible, The Geese of Beaver Bog appeals equally to birdwatchers, environmentalists, wildlife enthusiasts, and readers of reflective nature writing. Fans of authors such as Peter Matthiessen, John Hay, and Rachel Carson will appreciate Heinrich’s thoughtful prose and patient attention to the rhythms of the wild.

This 2005 Ecco paperback edition remains a sought-after title among collectors of natural history, ornithology, and environmental literature. An excellent addition to any wildlife, birding, or ecology collection.
