The Gettysburg Companion: The Complete Guide to America’s Most Famous Battle by Mark Adkin is a substantial and extensively illustrated study of the Battle of Gettysburg, the pivotal three-day engagement of the American Civil War fought in July 1863. Published by Aurum Press in 2008, this impressive reference work combines detailed military history with maps, diagrams, photographs and specially commissioned artwork to provide a comprehensive examination of the campaign, battlefield and opposing armies.
Adkin examines the battle at both strategic and tactical level, placing the Gettysburg campaign in context before following the movements and engagements of Union and Confederate forces across the battlefield. Particular attention is given to the organisation of the armies, their commanders, individual units, weapons, equipment, uniforms and battlefield tactics. Orders of battle provide information on unit strengths, casualties and commanding officers down to battalion and battery level.
A major strength of The Gettysburg Companion is its visual presentation. It contains approximately seventy full-colour maps charting the campaign and individual actions, together with panoramic photographs of the modern battlefield overlaid with historical troop positions and movements. Sixteen pages of original paintings depict uniforms worn by more than fifty units, while additional photographs, portraits and diagrams help reconstruct the events of the battle.
The Gettysburg Companion is an excellent reference for students and collectors of American Civil War history, particularly those interested in Gettysburg, battlefield archaeology, military cartography, uniforms and the armies of the Union and Confederacy.
