The History of Henry Esmond, Esq.: A Colonel in the Service of Her Majesty Queen Anne is one of the major historical novels by celebrated Victorian author William Makepeace Thackeray, best known for Vanity Fair. Originally published in 1852, the novel is presented as the memoir of its fictional protagonist, Henry Esmond, and is set principally during the reign of Queen Anne in the early eighteenth century.
Thackeray combines fictional characters with genuine historical events and personalities, creating a richly detailed portrait of English society, politics, military life and dynastic intrigue. Written deliberately in a style reminiscent of eighteenth-century prose, The History of Henry Esmond remains an important example of Victorian historical fiction.
This attractive Walter Scott, Ltd. edition of The History of Henry Esmond is particularly interesting as a late Victorian prize book. Although no publication date is printed in the volume, the original School Board of Glasgow prize label is dated Session 1897–98, establishing that this copy was already in circulation by the late 1890s. The surviving prize label adds considerable period character and provenance to the volume.
The History of Henry Esmond is handsomely bound in green cloth with contrasting panels, gilt ruling and gilt spine lettering, complemented by a bright gilt top edge to the text block.
