The Integration Model is a 24-page illustrated government information booklet issued in March 1974 by the South African Department of Information in Pretoria. Produced during the apartheid era, the publication outlines the government’s policy framework concerning racial and territorial separation, commonly referred to as the “homeland” or “separate development” policy.
The Integration Model includes several maps, diagrams and statistical tables illustrating migration patterns, the movement of peoples into the interior of South Africa, and the geographic distribution of the Bantu homelands. Maps show the designated territories associated with various ethnic groups such as the Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Venda and Sotho, alongside statistical summaries derived from the 1970 population census. The material reflects the political messaging and ideological framework promoted by the South African state during the early 1970s.
Publications of this kind were produced for both domestic and international audiences as part of the government’s information campaign and today survive as historical primary documents illustrating the political narrative and administrative policies of the apartheid period.
