The Kruger Experience – An important scientific study of Kruger National Park examining the ecological processes that create and maintain heterogeneity in African savanna landscapes, with particular emphasis on conservation management and adaptive approaches within one of South Africa’s most significant protected areas.

The Kruger Experience: Ecology and Management of Savanna Heterogeneity is a substantial scientific work edited by Johan T. du Toit, Kevin H. Rogers and Harry C. Biggs, bringing together ecological research and management experience from South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Published by Island Press in 2003, the volume explores the concept of heterogeneity within savanna ecosystems and the importance of recognising natural variation when managing large protected landscapes.
The Kruger Experience has long served as one of Africa’s most important centres for research into wildlife ecology, vegetation dynamics and conservation management. This book uses the park as a major case study through which to examine the interaction of ecological processes, including vegetation, herbivory, fire, water availability and landscape variation. It also considers how scientific knowledge can be incorporated into practical conservation decision-making and adaptive management.
Rather than viewing the African savanna as a uniform ecosystem, the contributors emphasise the complexity and variability that occur across space and through time. This makes The Kruger Experience particularly relevant to researchers and students working in ecology, zoology, environmental science, wildlife management and conservation biology.
With its strong South African focus, The Kruger Experience is also an excellent specialist reference for readers interested in the ecology and management of Kruger National Park and the wider Lowveld region. The volume includes a foreword by Anthony R. E. Sinclair and Brian H. Walker and represents an important contribution to the scientific literature surrounding African savanna ecosystems and protected-area management.
Condition – Good
Paperback copy with a firm, substantial text block. The clear factory laminate on the covers is lifting and delaminating in several areas, particularly along the upper edge of the front cover, around the spine margins and along portions of the cover edges. This has produced visible rippling and raised sections of plastic. There is additional rubbing, creasing and general edge and corner wear to the covers. The laminate deterioration is cosmetic but quite noticeable.
